Everything You Need To Know To Draw The Charles Mill Lake Monster

the Charles Mill Lake MonsterTopper2

Like the Creature from the Black Lagoon if said lagoon was in Ohio and he didn’t have arms!!

I’m in the middle of a pond project and summertime makes it harder to find the time to beast, so I’m letting this bad boy run another week. So those of you who havent drawn yet… now’s yer chance!

It’s getting on summertime, and here in the midwest, we don’t so much have you sandy beaches and salty seas. Nope, we’ve got murky bottomed, leach laden, frog brimming tubs of amber and weeds nestled between our forests and plains. Does that stop the fun, hell no! I might go as far as to say the constant questioning of how deeply you’ll actually sink into the muck adds a flavor you’ll never get on the coasts. And it’s at one of these midwestern lakes that this beasts story begins.

Put yourself back in time to say 1959, in Ohio… what’s that like? I don’t know maybe Imagine you’re in Stand Bye Me, (lots of horn rimmed glasses and short sleeve button up shirts etc)… but you’re old enough to drink down by the lake with some buds… which is exactly what your are doing when a beast with the following descriptors shambled from the night blackened depths!

  • Stands approximately 7 feet tall
  • Large flipper like feet, that left deep footprints as evidence
  • long, skinny and somewhat amphibious looking legs
  • A long wormlike, green torso with no discernible arms
  • A fish-like head described as similar to a famed lagoon loving movie monster,
  • Piercing emerald eyes that glowed with horror

That’s what you got! Keep in mind it was 1959 so their movie monster references are going to be somewhat limited. If you want to include a lil of 1989’s Leviathan, I won’t tell….All I ask is you don’t try too hard and have fun with it! I’m extending this one a week so We’ll now close off submissions for judgement midnight of Friday the 9th … As always, We’ll gather the judges council and pick one to win a shirt, so get your asses doodling!

Judgement Is Complete

The First Place Charles Mill MonsterEntryThe Judges have convened and decision rendered! Here’s their reasoning!

Judge Cody says
I’m voting #3 for the subliminal, jazzy dick design. I like to think that hat is just glued to his fin, awkwardly dangling as he dong-dances.

Judge Ken says
i’m going with #3 as well. not overly detailed, but what is there works together in elegant harmony. that is a perfectly drawn little fish hat!

Judge Mona says
#3! My dad LOVES Bugs Bunny cartoons, and this guy reminds me of the hello my honey, hello my baby dancing, top hatted frog from that, so…in honor of Fathers Day, and my awesome pops…I felt it appropriate to go this route. This one’s for you Big Mike!

Judge Me
went for number 9. I’m giving points for new blood, those freaking silken boxers (sure you can say its swimwear but i won’t believe you) and that amazing awkward school photo smile!

And Judge Sarah went with
#6 I have to give this one to D Howe. Love the line quality and attention to detail. Plus, I have never experienced so many conflicting feeling about overalls.

Disagree if you must but know that judgement is law and to the winner a shirt will go…. Thanks to drawers and judges alike. And even though the contest is done we’ll always welcome new Charles Lake Monster drawings for the archives! So draw on, and remember, 25 beasts drawn earns you a shirt!
