Ogopogo

The Long, Lean and Goat Headed Canadian Sea Serpent

You know so much of a legend’s popularity hinges on a good name, and really there aren’t that many more fun to say than “Ogopogo” Just the way the syllables bounce harkens to a scene where undulating coils of serpent scooch through the waters topped with what would have to be a good natured head, with the single goal of decimating some local fish populations!

First noted by the Aboriginal peoples in Canada, Ogopogo technically predates Nessie sightings by 100 or so years… While Nessie is most often describes as Plesiosaur-ish, Oggie tends to be more of the long undulating prehistoric whale format ala the Basilosaurus. Said to be anywhere from a foot to 4 feet thick and somewhere between 15 and 50 feet long with a head that resembles a goat or a horse. The most fun tellings describe a playful and fun loving beast bouncing and diving through the cold Canadian waters and the most un-fun ones pretty much describe a floating log… but that’s why we have you… you know what sea serpents look like, you know what Canadians look like and I’m pretty sure that’s about as far as I need to hold your hand, so with that I’ll leave you the lil music hall ditty said to be the source of this week’s protagonist’s name

I’m looking for the Ogopogo,
His mother was a mutton,
His father was a whale.
I’m going to put a little bit of salt on his tail.

judgement Is Complete

our judge Our Judge this week was Mrs Lauren Mitchell, She ws a lil late but did a damn fine job…She is long time work cohort, friend and email campaign master… If you want I wrote a better bio the first time she judged here in battle phoenix!

The Ogopogo Entry # 2

The First Place Ogopogo Entry

I was curious how deep we’d get before we got a pogo sticking beast! I mean look at the thigh definition that much hopping can bring about… and I’m gonna sidestep how great the mustachio-d goat head with the wonky eyes is (it really is pretty great) in favor of just loving the hell out of his shoulder mounted fish friend!

Judge’s Commentary – I was hoping someone would do the obvious and include a pogo stick – and perfectly placed to keep things G-rated. Mustaches are in this year so that’s a plus. Also, I love the fish even though I can’t tell if he’s a sidekick or dinner. First place!

The Second Place Ogopogo Entry

Goddamn such emotion! No idea if this is actually a reference from a particular movie (Dear jaws I’m sorry I forsook you…) but given my penchant for movies about giant human eating monsters in fresh water lakes… I can guarantee if it exists i will watch it, and odds are multiple times! Huge fan of the green hue and dammit if that dead goat isn’t adorable too!

Judge’s Commentary – There are so many great things about this one. I like that whoever submitted it decided to tell a story and not just draw the beast. So many emotions are being expressed and the while the woman slapping the sheriff is amusing, it’s the winking Ogopogo that clinches second place.

Look how much caring is in those magical eyes! “what ya gonna do today seanbeast?” “well mostly I was planning on basking in the warm Canadian sun and staring intently at things… you?” …. haha… also it looks to me like thinkgeek has a new sleeping bag they need to start producing stat!

Judge’s Commentary – An Ogopogo with Bette Davis eyes – something I didn’t expect to come across. Is he really sweet or does he make this face just long enough for you to get closer before attacking you? Not sure I want to find out, but third place for the intrigue alone.

Man even with a mouthful of fish a mane just makes a beast look classy! haha! …and maybe it’s just me but I swear it looks a lil like this one is not floating in Okanagan lake but looks instead to be behind a blue hued dune humping an ottoman?

So that’s quite possibly the worst maple leaf belly button framing tattoo I’ve ever seen (I’ve seen 2… well 3 now) or maybe it would be better as a festive treasure trail and I think I made up for it anyways what with the subtly inserted canadian shaped pipe… I mean you all caught that right? ๐Ÿ˜‰

That’s a lot of serpent! I’m not sure if any of you watched that Jim Henson’s Creature Workshop, but Brian Henson always made a huge deal about how important it was that the eyes could focus on a single camera… and I say it’s only important if you want your beast to look smart… and aren’t dumb looking beasts almost better? Especially when they have lil’ tiny head fins!

Meow! kitty MEOW! Man good giant floppy goat ear and old wizardly cataract eyes! Am I alone in that all i wanna do is scratch under his/her lil bearded chin… imagine how itchy a beard like that would be with no hands with which to fix it? I mean… I suppose you could continually beach your face on a shallow rocky shore… but that just seems unpleasant…

Haha dammit this one got me good! I mean that’s the point, but still, just saying, me likey the stupidly funny! a great concept mixed with subtle touches like the reptile tongue and silly horse blanket…. Plus it’s good to know mounties wear also wear cop shades…

That is some serious beast at the end of that lure! Such good dead eyes on the horse head and I will always stand behind someone willing to make every single one of there stick figures have the exact same expression, the way nature intended them! Also what the hell is that kid doing in an inner tube off what appears to be a tugboat in Canada!

So for it to have become the most popular tattoo flash in all of Canada I think you needed to go overboard and make the background wash in the shape of a maple leaf… but dammit it’s pretty good… and I can get lost in that eye forever!

Haha! Good bubbles as a scene setter, great “I’ve been fed too many sugar cubes”, farmyard horse teeth and I’m entertained that his mouth could be agape with surprise or horror or just one hell of a fishy belch!

This one comes to us a little late but we get to fault the artist’s mom for the delay so that’s kinda fun! And I’ll be sure to tell out judge to treat it fairly… Now to business! Man that is a fantastic scowl! technically great eyes all the way around from the “gulp” on the fisherman’s face to our fishes “seriously?” And great thick lumberjacky canadian neck!
