So Sun Wukong is one of the more famous heroes of Asian myth, but he’s one of those guys that doesn’t make it much into western culture. Suffice it to say his story dates back to the Ming Dynasty, and he, in the romanticized telling of a true pilgrimage, walked by the side of the monk Xuanzang as he quested to india from china in search of Buddha’s teachings and is most often referenced as the Monkey King…
Now I could confuse you with yarns and yarns of legend, but let’s just keep this simple and say:
- He’s an ancient Chinese monkey
- He wears human clothes
- He carries a magical gold banded quarterstaff that can shrink to the size of a toothpick to hide behind his ear
- He’s like muscles of banded steel/Conan strong
- Super good at fighting, plus he’s a magical monkey who can jump crazy far
- Can replicate himself by pulling hairs from his body for further fighting assistance
- Prone to humanizing flaws such as defiance, short temper, greed, violence
- Super Into Buddhism
So maybe you pull out your old kung fu movie vhs tapes for reference! Maybe you just get high and watch Kung Fu Panda, maybe you just take whatever you need to say to the world and just do it in the shape of a comical fighting chinese monkey? Just have fun doing it and we’ll gladly show it off!
I said this in the newsletter, and I’ll say it again, it’s not a written rule, but as far as I’m concerned a beast in ribbon wrapped tabis always wins! Thanks to all who drew! Know that judgement is now law and to the victor go the spoils! And don’t forget, you can always send your drawings of Sun Wukong in late, you won’t win a shirt but I’ll gladly post it for everyone’s enjoyment!
