The Big Breasted Egyptian Hippo of Fertility
Now not only was Tauret the legendary Egyptian goddess of fertility and child birth but it was also her daily duty to rebirth the sun aaaaand to rebirth the souls of those passed into the underworld. Now if you were to ask me that’s a hell of a lot of birthing to deal with in a day, but perhaps that’s why this weeks hero is assembled from a combination of what reads like a of the Nile’s most bad ass.
Tauret is a Pregnant hippopotamus who stands on two legs, has large human breasts, the tail of a crocodile oh yeah and those aforementioned legs… they’re from a lion…. occasionally she has cow horns, carries and ankh or sports a headdress that represents the sun. Supposedly Tauret is always present in the birth chamber, where in typical mama hippo fashion she scares away demons or types that would wander too close or harm the mother or child.
I’ll finish this weeks description with the random fun fact that her image was most commonly used to adorn egyptian milk jugs where the milk poured from and open hole in the nipple of the relief… with that I ask you to gather your scribbling instruments and get to it!
