The Hootpecker

The Woodpecker That Never Sleeps!

In My opinion, American Lumberjacks had some of the most entertaining beasts in the history of beastdom. Generally they were an amalgam of multiple known creatures to describe forest noises, happenings and disappearances. The Hootpecker is no acception. Made of equal parts woodpecker and owl, the Hootpecker, never sleeps and spends all of his time clearing the forest of insects. Unlike almost every beast we’ve drawn to this point (the squonk is the only other that comes to mind), The Hootpecker is no danger to man and in fact his bug clearing services were greatly appreciated (unless one was an extraordinarily light sleeper at which point his all night knocking may have been a slight annoyance).

I know it’s early summer and many of you are out doing whatever the grown up version of kick the can is, but if there’s one thing I know about the internet, its that folks who frequent it like to draw owls. So hopefully i can draw a few of you back in to the fray. Make em cute, make em feathered, make em remarkably sleepy or overly caffeinated, just make sure they have some way of extracting bugs from trees late at night!

our judgeOur judge the week is Rose Mary Salazar, if you don’t know her, you should, because as a general rule Rose makes most things better. A once was work cohort of my wife’s, and now a friend, she’s a big hearted fun loving IT wizard and Aptify knower, who has been known to take electronics apart just to see how they tic. A huge fan of all things Mike Patton, riding in critical mass and I’m told a recent convert to the joys of watching people fall on “wipeout”. My only caution is dont try to take her shot for shot, cause she has a magical “Marion”-esque ability to stay standing when most folks would be head on the bar.

So our many time champion mythical beast warrior on hiatus for schooling, E wizzle, once coined the term “snoodling” for a very different activity, but I can’t help to think that it works just as well for this! he/she looks so very contented, you cant help but smile a little. And if you are heartless and feel no warmth just giggle at how freaking fat it is!

Judge’s Commentary

I love that he is so damn chubby and sleepy and happy. It just makes me smile.

“sometimes they just write themselves!” God damn grape tootsie roll pops were like my favorite thing as a kid, been forever since i’ve had one and now they have lil tiny ones that totally dont even require the full owl-science proven three licks. Kinda funny how good Woody or a Woody like character looks with owl eyes.

Judge’s Commentary

I like the Tootsie Owl/Woody combo and the verbiage, I can hear their voices in my head when I read it.

Yes those are some crazy hypnotoad eyes again! and such an electric red tuft! Though i gotta admit I’m incredibly sidetracked and enamored by her buggy companions/appetizers especially that green one with the Tammy Fays and the possibility that he’s a rare unicorn mosquito doing the backstroke!

Judge’s Commentary

I like that he looks like he all hopped up on caffiene and I especially like the ‘jazz hands’ fly.

You know I had thought I’d seen something like this from me before, then i looked to the right of the screen and realized i pretty much just penciled the silhouette I already made… oh well, I’d like to think this version is a lil less pensive maybe even a little cuter and wiser.

Why hello there little adorable hootpecker! As bird eyes go those are remarkably funloving, and I’m kind of entertained that we have three in a row pretty much perching on a similar branch, kind of like they all came in to the same set at a 1970s portrait studio, only thing missing is the collared velour shirts! Btw points for good crayon usage, though you did go a little outside the lines ; )!

Ha! Stupid bee! While seemingly an integral part of our ecosystem do they really have to be such dicks? How cute is this guys stubbly scrotum skinned noggin! The flipper like feet are pretty great and is the purple thing an additional bug? a supersonic jet or a rare glimpse of one of those mythical “rods”?

Ok so first off he’s fantastic, but to take you on a little journey, he’s half owl so he can turn his head a full 180, so he’s hiding something, which makes me wonder what he’s eating, what can be “nom” worthy yet still be worth hiding from prying eyes? Which immediately brings to mind cannibalism. Least that’s the way i see it.

My goodness you look oh so very round, bright and cheerful! And that lil bit of a smirk on that beak makes me wonder if he’s glad to see the icon of one of our most prolific contributors or if he just thinks that damn bug looks tasty!

Now listen here Ghost of Future Owls, if i meant woodpecker I woulda said woodpecker… though i gotta say your underpants are kinda fantastic and a borg eye never hurts, and if you are going to draw a jet-pack I will always recommend the old timey two tank variety… I’m curious do future owls have fire proof drumsticks or are those little dangling treats getting right about delicious by now?

So I will in fact believe this Hootpecker is a pimp, what with his fancy duds, hat and perhaps a stogie, though i worry a bit for his health (and i know a pimp cant be bothered with such trivial nonsense) but those eyes are screaming thyroid problem or the dreaded dia-beet-uz… nevertheless the pimpstick doubling as an axe is a nice touch.

AAAHH! My lord does anyone else suddenly feel very cold and alone? ha! I don’t know if it’s the sadness glossed puppydog eyes, the humorously beaklike lil nose, the fishbone brows or the baby bird feathers but this one got me pretty good!

The Hootpecker Entry # 12

Ooh kinda like a snow queen hootpecker! I like it cold and serene, almost calculating and the bobily head tuft is fantastically oversized and its feet just the right kind of mangled!

Alright, so honestly I have no idea whats going on here, but I know I enjoy the hell out of it so perhaps I’ll just leave it at that!

You know it makes some sense, owls love roosting in large holes in trees, woodpeckers love making holes in trees, a combo of both should essentially love making and living in luxury treeholes! Plus I love that he looks like he’s trying to see his brain through his brow!
