Everything You Need To Know to Draw a Kitsune!

The Kitsune

The Kitsune

Asia’s Magical, Multi-Tailed, Shapeshifting Fox!

So the first week we brought this contest online, my buddy Dan was all “hey we should do the Kitsune!” I don’t quite recall exactly what I said, but since i tend to be a bit of a dick in the real world, I assume it was something about how we had a few child eating bogies to knock out and he’d have to wait a few weeks for his precious Volpix… the way I figure, 4 years is probably more than long enough… So this one’s for you T bird! Sorry it took so long!

Now as many of you know, Japanese beasts confuse the hell out of me. Many of their magical creatures share a lot of the same characteristics (shape shifting, possession, growing extra appendages with age, trickery etc). So as not to embarrass myself, we’re going a lil light on the mythology this round.

Suffice it to say It’s a magical fox who grows extra tails with age. In some stories, it works for the spirit protector of rice and prosperity as a messenger and bringer of good fortune. In contrast, seemingly just as many stories place it in the malicious spirit camp. Known to possess folks to do their foxy bidding or shape shift to trick folks into the same end… then there’s just the oddball “Splash” telling of the Kitsune who transforms into a woman, for no further reason than to marry a man and just live happily ever after?

Jump ahead to modern times, and there’s no shortage of current Kitsune references. As previously mentioned, the Pokemon, Volpix was a kitsune, as is Ninetails, as is the possessing spirit in the ever popular Naruto, and I know there’s at least one in Inuyasha and I would assume like 55% of deviantart portfolios… but don’t let that bug you.. this is your time to shine, we don’t care, nor need you to be “good”, so long as you have fun, so here’s what you’ve got to work with.

  • At it’s most basic level, it’s a fox, small, cute reddish and canine
  • Said to gain tails with age or experience, to my knowledge, the maximum is 9
  • Able to shapeshift into human form, but often has issue disguising it’s tail/s
  • Able to possess humans, objects and animals and or create elaborate illusions and dreamworlds
  • It’s favorite food is thinly sliced fried tofu
  • In many tales, it’s also able to fly

That’s it! All I ask is you don’t try too hard and have fun with it! We’ll close off submissions for judgement midnight of Friday the 11th… As always our judge’s favorite wins a shirt, so get your asses doodling!

Judgement Is Complete

the first place kitsune drawing I pulled the aforementioned buddy Dan, back in to sort through our multi- tailed foxes for worth and after much debate he came back with #12!

“Kawaii! as the Japanese say. This little guy looks both cute and stoic with his fading tails. Great rendering and I love his expression!”

Disagree if you must but know that judgement is law and to the winner a shirt will go…. Thanks to drawers and judges alike. And even though the contest is done we’ll always welcome new Kitsune drawings for the archives! So draw on and remember, 25 beasts drawn earns you a shirt!

Kinda funny how a vibrantly red flamelike tail also feels a lot like a giant version of on those beautiful variegated tulips… And I like that you can tell it’s magic cause those feets never touch the ground!

Feels a lil like my subconscious has already jumped ahead to 2016’s battle turkey! And while some of you may question the lack of pants… I’d like those same “yous” to explain how the hell you shove 9 tails through a pair of cutoffs? And beyond that, foxes don’t need no stinking trousers!

I mean this one needs a haiku right? Raging mountain wind – Shall not move my paper tails – Because I rule you!… (In my opinion, haikus always end better with a Travis of the Cosmos quote!)

So I grew up in the “Fox Valley” where every locals business had a fox head or tail in there logo lock up…. So I guess it’s understatndable that these kitsune drawings all trigger some random childhood memory… this one, with its striking graphical fox, is my “Fox Trot Fun Run” freebie T that I favored for several summers… sadly this one’s disqualified for a forbidden tenth tail 😉

Yes! Foxes really are the cattiest of dogs and in proper feline fashion this one’s got such a great disapproving stare. And such great fluff!

General rule of thumb… when a fox trots up looking stuffed full of no good and wearing a mickey mouse mask… just run… God that face is great though!

If your a shapeshifting fox, why wouldn’t you square up that jaw a lil, give yourself some dragon wings and a perfectly designed weaponized alien tendril?

The Kitsune Entry # 8

The Kitsune Entry # 8

Oh the ratty fuzz on this one! And he looks sooo thirsty under that alien black sun! It’s possible I’m in love!

The Kitsune Entry # 9

The Kitsune Entry # 9

“anyone want a free sting from a scorpion tail?… I’ve got a perfectly good scorpion tail here just waiting to sting! Come one come all!”… And it’s impossible for me to imagine a voice for this one other than that of He-man’s Trapjaw!

Oh man, I’m going to guess the young ‘n who drew this won’t know either of these references, but this feels exactly like a cootie got dropped in the toxic waste from Robocop 2! And such amazing hollow eyes!

For a second I thought it had caught one of it’s own tails (which you would think being a dog, would be high on it’s list of priorities) but I’m pretty sure that’s it’s tongue… Such innocence in those eyes, and I kinda love that it’s postured like it might need to pee.

The Kitsune Entry # 12

The Kitsune Entry # 12

Can’t you see this as a slow fade animation where the white dissolves and it’s not just a kitsune but like 15 adorable foxes squished in and attached to all those tails? Well I can!

The Kitsune Entry # 13

The Kitsune Entry # 13

that’s the “Am I seriously going to have to get up and take care of this? Can’t you see I was overwhelmingly comfortable here?” face if I’ve ever seen it!

The Kitsune Entry # 14

The Kitsune Entry # 13

Dadadadada Bat Fox! Bat Fox! hahaha god every time I look at it, it startles me! That’s good weasely teefed horror beast!

The Kitsune Entry # 15

The Kitsune Entry # 14

Oh man! This just goes to prove there’s no wrong in shape shifting! I wanna wrestle this thing to the ground just to hug it!

The Kitsune Entry # 16

The Kitsune Entry # 16

Yesss this is like a great movie with one of those surprisingly abrupt endings… I feel like I need one more clue to bring it all home… and they say “leave em wanting more” … gah!

The Kitsune Entry # 17

The Kitsune Entry # 17

Such a strinking posture! So the real question is, magical aura lines? Bad ass warrior markings? Or has this guy been adorably rolling in the strawberry patch again?

The Kitsune Entry # 18

The Kitsune Entry # 18

The low lidded cartoon eye is the most magical thing… I mean right now he’s just saying, “I see you, you see me… I get it, I’ve got a lot of tails… all’s cool”… but change that lid level by a degree or add a vein and he’s as high as Towely! Nice bamboo btw!

I mean Donnie Darko was a good enough movie but I am now officially of the opinion that it woulda been a helluva lot better had it been a dirty kitsune costume instead of that dumb rabbit! I love those weird knuckly nubs! And another great case of ghost leg!

The Kitsune Entry # 20

The Kitsune Entry # 20

Yes such big ears you have! Our artist says its modeled after a Fennec Fox, but I’m pretty damn sure he was working from a pic of my old teddy bear hamster… Just saying… and dammit those are some clean lines on that cutlery!

The Kitsune Entry # 21

The Kitsune Entry # 21

Aww such soft fuzzy edges! Like a pic of Elizabeth Taylor from 1985! And those extra long floppy fore-paws make it look a lil like she’s playing a very glamorous, but invisible piano!

The Kitsune Entry # 22

The Kitsune Entry # 22

Man that is an insane lil butt that tiny misshapen party goer and whilst obviously a blindfold, it’s almost more fun to assume its a civil war style bandage from a recent head wound… cause at that point, we don’t even know if he’s at the right party!

The Kitsune Entry # 23

The Kitsune Entry # 23

You know I love to pretend to “know” whats going on in all these pics or at least who the players are and this one has me pleasantly stumped to the point that I’ve stopped trying to analyze and just started quietly singing “someone left my fox out in the raaain…” and is that umbrella wearing pants?

The Kitsune Entry # 24

The Kitsune Entry # 24

Who’s a pretty lil fox? Whoooooo’s a preeeetty lil fox? Well, you are lil guy!… doesnt it almost make you wonder if japanese foxes just wag their singular tails exceedingly fast?

The Kitsune Entry # 25

The Kitsune Entry # 25

Gah! Well this is about the cutest thing I’ve seen in weeks… such good fluff! I think I can taint it though (cause for some reason I find that my task in such situations)… if you just imagine each of those adorable floppy tails comes with it’s own functioning butthole… you want one a lil less!

The Kitsune Entry # 26

The Kitsune Entry # 26

Hahaha That’s good sad fox! I swear if you stare long enough… you start to get cold! Look at those tiny lil feet at the ends of those round meaty hocks! And I’m not positive, but its possible those front legs are just tied around his neck!

The Kitsune Entry # 27

The Kitsune Entry # 27

I like to think of this as a singular frame from what started as a great idea, but soon became the most complicated walk cycle ever created! And if you look at it that way, running forever but getting nowhere… those eyes become soooo desperate!

The Kitsune Drawing # 28

Yes! She’s back and drawing old beasts for her shirt… and this is one hell of a two legged puffball of a magical fox… plus it has that fantastic grainy quality of an old Black n white Sasquatch photo!
