The Mock Turtle

It’s The Thing Mock Turtle Soup is Made From!

Now I know technically this week’s subject should be classified as a “fictional beast”, but I’m going to trust you can get over it, cause dammit there just aren’t that many mythical turtle beasts and as the internet says “I like turtles”!

The mock turtle is a beast encountered by Alice in Lewis Carroll’s “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” First mentioned by the Red Queen in passing:

Then the Queen left off, quite out of breath, and said to Alice, “Have you seen the Mock Turtle yet?”
“No,” said Alice. “I don’t even know what a Mock Turtle is.”
“It’s the thing Mock Turtle Soup is made from,” said the Queen.

Later in the story our hero was actually encountered by Alice and the Gryphon, where he is described as melancholy and tells a long, rambling, pun rich, story using the double meaning of school to describe his learning and life in the ocean and playing on the similarity or the words “tortoise” and “taught us”. Mostly… he sounds like he’s into dad humor… mostly…

As for physical characteristics, he’s relatively straight forward in beast terms. Body and front fins of a giant sea turtle and head, legs and tail of a calf (cause those are the weird cuts of calf meat mock turtle soup is made from)… And I think this bears repeating: don’t forget the melancholy! I wanna see some melancholy in those eyes!

our judgeOur judge this week is veteran Mythical Beast Drawing champion, continuing contributor, part of the famed Neurauter clan, and as her portfolio site says: “teacher, artist, traveler, photographer, daughter, sister, aunt, girlfriend, business partner, love love, chef, gardener, dreamer.” Rumor has it that she just got her first gig as an art teacher so I offer my congratulations for that!

The First Place Mock Turtle Entry

“toytol fwiendship” – ok so it’s not often I do this but this here is an extraordinary case, I’m fully taking imaginary points away from this one for being too f’ing cute, I mean the eyes, the forward lean of vulnerability with the lil outstretched flipper for balance and what oddly looks like too naked a furry thigh… man… nicely played!

Judge’s Commentary – Yeah…way too freaking cute, but I don’t care. so, i had to go with this one. so many reasons why…his tear-full puppy-dog eyes, that look like they are about to burst into a waterfall…the subdue color pencil rendering that fit so well within the scheme of “wonderland”… the dainty pose and form are perfect…and lastly the fact that he sadly holds onto his cute little friend that appears even more sad than him.

The Second Place Mock Turtle Entry

Oh he Does have arms! You know I was staring at this guy for a full few seconds being awful entertained with his wacky armless balance, bu they’re in there they just sorta blend in like say your ladybug wing! Anyways I’m relatively confident this guy has something important to say about our future… now if there was only sound…

Judge’s Commentary – This one looks so worried that it’s adorable. I love the simplicity of the contour pencil, the baby-like teeth and the sad boney legs. And the fact that there is such a mismatch of features is fantastic…tiny horns and eyes with a giant snout/muzzle. So many wrongs making a right.

The Third Place Mock Turtle Entry

“It’s a mock turtle in a mock turtleneck” – Well of course it is! And I’m betting not the last we will see of this combo this week! You know, sometimes a turtle needs a lil extra collar warmth without drawing attention to the fact that he now sports multiple chin’s! In other news, I kinda love the scribbly 1970s kids book feel to this guy!

Judge’s Commentary – This one is so intelligent …a mock turtle stuffed into a turtleneck sweater. I, myself find comfort in wearing my turtlenecks up high over my face. there is so much comfort in seeing this guy do the same. Is he sad? Is he embarrassed by his calf-like features? What is he masking? I love the mystery in what we do not see. And lastly, the monotone, scribble rendering is pleasing

Also known as – GamerMoo… I figure the easiest way to keep someone from eating a giant veal turtle (I’m entirely ag’in folks eating turtles) is to make him, radioactive, fanged and tasting vaguley of petrol chemicals!

you know it’s making more an more sense… when you think about it, one of them there Galapagos Tortoises and a cow really do chew their salty weeds and cud (respectively) in a very similarly boring and adorable manner… And let’s be honest, is there anything more fun to draw than turtle/elephant/dino toes?

Man good floating perspective… and also might i add, introspective? Though watch enough multiverse specials and you’ll realize that you’re wallowing in your turtly woes for naught because you are in fact a real turtle as well as a very successful tap dancer and probably in many universes a delicious Amburger (for amphibian)

“So it’s a cow, wrapped in a turtle, who’s wrapped in a turtleneck sweater, that’s printed with cow” – You know there is no way i can argue with or even really improve on it, so I’ll just say nicely played, and good high energy cow tail!

So I’m trying to figure if that’s sort of a chacha, or if its really just moving in a bunch of entertainingly opposing directions? I fully support the ascot and I also really appreciate the sleepy eyes!

So first off you get full dinner napkin points, but the medium aside, i absolutely love the “hey i’m a fun loving frisbee catching hovering in the air kinda turtle… who also hates himself… like a lot…” feel to this guy!

Noooo! Mr cow turtle nooooo! But then again, I’ve had me some turtles in my time and while adorable, they may not be the famed methodical decision makers legend makes them out to be… So sometimes you just have to let nature take its course… Great satyry gams on this one btw!

Interesting… I was unaware that an entire body could frown! Those are some really nice long turtly flipper arms!

So love the heavy turtle shell scale treatment, the slightly wonky eyes of an obviously mad cow on that vaguely giraffe head are fantastic (and I will swear are following me around the room)… Plus your Alice has what seems to be limbs scavenged from a swollen limb center, and i kinda love that! Plus you get the full spiral bound notebook points this week!

I like that it sorta works as the slightly eccentric grandmother who loves trinkets and knows all about magic, or a cross dressing (and slightly amphibious) central American dictator! And those layers of would be mouths and nostril flaps are enthralling!
