The Phoenix

Excuse Me, But I Believe Your Bird is On Fire!

So we made it through 2012… or did we (insert twighlight zone music)… regardless, seems to me that the best way to start the new year is with the worldwide symbol for rebirth, Trans Ams and poor Xmen character developments! The Phoenix is possibly the most well known of your airborne Mythical Beasts, first originating in ancient Egypt as the Bennu, a heiroglyphic heron who’s life cycle was linked to the repeating patterns of the Nile and the rising and setting of the sun.

Later as retold by the greeks the Egyptian Phoenix gained a few additional descriptors, it was now said to resemble an eagle with gold and red plummage who busied itself carrying around and embalming in eggs of myrh, the remains of it’s father (who if I’m not mistaken would be itself?)… When it reached the end of it’s lifecycle, it would build a nest of incense twigs, lie down and die. From its corpse a small worm would emerge, and the heat of the sun would transform the worm into a new Phoenix.

Now folks in the middle ages really started to flare up (booo!) the story, making the Phoenix live upwards of 500 years and at the end of it’s life it would build a pyre of aromatic twigs, turn to face the sun and bat it’s wings to fan the flames that consumed it, allowing a new phoenix to rise from it’s ashes.

Regardless of the amount of drama in the telling, we know the Phoenix is a bird, we know it’s meant to represent the circle of life from death and beyond that it remind us all how cool birds on fire can look. I leave the rest to you!

judgement Is Complete

our judgeOur Judge this week is Lauren Mitchell, marketing wizard and master of email campaigns. A lot of you old timers will know her as one of the last shining faces to join the old team during the downfall of PB. I know her as incredibly quick witted, kind almost to a fault and snarky as hell! I’m excited to say I’m working side by side with her again and she’s quite giddy about her judging responsibilities.

So it’s funny, another of those when i saw the thumbnail I thought it to be a lil dressed up and sad darkwave Phoenix… It’s so not that… it is however cool as hell and good kinda creepy. Love the drippy beak.

Judge’s Commentary

Is this Phoenix dying or rising? Regardless, Morrissey is the soundtrack. It’s dark. It’s beautiful. It’s 1st place.

I kinda worry that a caption might spoil the magic of this one… so enjoy a moment of quiet reflection…

Judge’s Commentary

Very Sesame Street “one of these things is not like the others.” What I really like about this one is that the two birds on the right don’t have expressions so I can make up my own story. This is a polygamist Phoenix and his two wives…

Ooh! A phoenix with a bit of a chip on it’s shoulder, he’s just doing his job, and if you’d just look down Mr Bird you’d see that the poor bear is obviously working with a horrendous foot injury!

Judge’s Commentary

Both quickly sketched and witted, I feel like this was drawn on the back of a napkin with a cheap Bic pen. Even if it wasn’t, I’m going to pretend it was. Smokey (who’s face looks like Snuggle the fabric softener bear) vs. a ‘tude-tastic Phoenix? Yes, please.

This one’s, if not a full on rip off, at least heavily influenced by the Deep Fried Pine Booby from Squidbillies, who will always make me laugh! you can see him here You’re not so bad yourself!

Ha! and so close to new years, you’re going to accidently trigger all the folks in resolution nicotine withdrawls to get unnaturally angry with you! Now if he could just turn into a new cigarette instead of a bird! Very nice ashtray btw!

I’m going to have to check the archives, but it’s possible this is the very first legit painted entry ever! I kinda love it! The artist claimed a hummingbird resemblance but I’m thinking that beak and eye scream the rare flaming chickadee.

Could this be a scene from the long lost pilot of the nichiest food network show ever “how to cook eggs using only your power to self immolate”? I like to think so… and that little candle flame on the top of his head is cute as hell

Ok so bird/people hybrids are just so scary, but thankfully I’m guessing from the condition of those wings he’s not flying anywhere far, his feet are freaking amazing but what’s with the mischeif in those eyes? What does he know?

This is another animated one, if it’s not playing, click the image to see it in it’s glory! My favorite part is when it re loops and just sorta sits up, poor guy only get’s a few seconds of life, but with such a teeny heart he prolly doesn’t even notice…

Polly wanna get set on fire and not be a parrot anymore! My lord does that guy have some creepy eyes! Again very nice head plummage though! And are those stink lines or just some smoldering?

You gotta love a surrealist Phoenix and the proportions of its feet make me smile… So you think the giant yin yang was intentional or one of those wacky subconscious things? And I’m sure its a tail but butt flames are funnier!

Ow my brain! Ok so is that a pistachio, a land clam, or a crazy Okeefean egg? And I would be the happiest man alive if the next time I bought Raisin Bran, this was on the box.

Just cause I adore your intricate ass fine line wizardry, doesn’ t mean I don’t think you should get help… I gotta admit the sh*t Phoenix is kinda brilliant though!

… this is kinda funny, we finish it off this week with a very familiar looking canvas, that if I do the math correctly, actually means you didn’t draw at all this week… you bastard!
