New Guinea’s Legendary Living Pterosaur!
Ah, New Guinea! it’s the world’s second biggest island… it’s a beautiful, famously impenetrable landscape… so why the hell shouldn’t it have a dinosaur? And if you’re going to have a dinosaur… why not make it fly… and if it’s gonna fly… why not tell everyone it glows? Odds are you lost the non believers at dinosaur anyways!
So the basic legend of the Ropen, is that he still exists. He doesn’t do a whole lot in modern times, beyond startle the hell out of visitors and natives alike. But seeing as it’s a probably at least a decedent of a dinosaur, I wouldn’t go feeding it clovers.
First documented by the modern world when European missionaries sought to spread their craft after world war II. They described it as having a twenty foot wingspan, a long beak filled with teeth, a long pendulous tail tipped with a diamond shaped flap, and a slow ponderous flight. But what makes the legend slightly more believable is that the native cultures have been documenting some sort of winged reptile in their art and verbal histories for thousands of years, And they give it the added descriptor of possessing a soft ghostly glow.
- A flying dinosaur from New Guinea with a twenty foot wing span
- Has a long tail tipped with a diamond shaped fin and dorsal bumps on it’s spine
- Has a what you might call a toothy maw
- Glows for short periods of time while it flies
- Maybe lives in volcanoes
That’s what you got! All I ask is you don’t try too hard and have fun with it! We’ll close off submissions for judgement midnight of Friday the 7th… As always, We’ll gather the judges council and pick one to win a shirt, so get your asses doodling!
The Judges have convened and decision rendered! Here’s what everyone picked and their reasonings:
Sarah
I’m giving this to #2 by ITNet. This drawing had me feeling nostalgic, I loved the shower curtain wings. The only thing that could make this better is an emergency umbrella parachute. And those buck teeth seem so wrong, but they really cement this win for me.
Ken
I vote for #8. Mostly because it’s obvious that Sneurat’s Sean drawing has gotten more aggressive since they became engaged. I mean why is his leg all mangled?
Cody
I’m going #3. It’s nice to see a beast focus on pure pleasure as opposed to it’s innate desire to rend and destroy. Is that a mai tai from Chef Shagri-la I spot? (close it was a Dr Phong)
Mona
#6 – Because…THIGHS FOR DAYS! I mean seriously, IF that Ropen has a 20 ft wing span, the scale of those thighs is impressive! Plus, the dangling, cowboy boot wearing, legs and tiny gloved hands just take it over the top!
Chip
And I’m breaking the tie with a vote for #6! Cause while it’s a “drawing contest” silly wordplay counts too! It’s a magical beast And I mean that’s what it’s doin… Ropin’!
Disagree if you must but know that judgement is law and to the winner a shirt will go…. Thanks to drawers and judges alike. And even though the contest is done we’ll always welcome new Ropin drawings for the archives! So draw on, and remember, 25 beasts drawn earns you a shirt!
