Everything you need to know to draw the Sphinx!

The Sphinx

The Sphinx

Imagine a lion bodied and eagle winged Alex Trebek who eats your face if you answer questions incorrectly

This is another of those: “how have we not done a sphinx yet?”. Well dammit we’re about to fix that!

Lots of ancient cultures have some form of Sphinx, most notably the Greeks and Egyptians, but there are most definitely asian and middle eastern versions as well. At its core, a Sphinx has the head of a human, the body of a lion and the wings of an eagle. The general temperament of the beast seems dependent on the source of origin of the tale. Greek sphinxes were merciless and bloodthirty, Egyptian and Middle Eastern sphinxes more reserved in their actions and represent potential power, and your asian sphinxes are often content with more interaction and routine activities like eating people’s sins as they pass.

Most of us familiar with the Sphinx, know it for it’s legendary riddle. First appearing in greek myths but repeated over and over again in young adult fantasy… the story generally plays out like this: A traveler needs to get to somewhere, that location is guarded by a giant human headed, lion bodied, eagle winged beast. Said beast says something along the lines of, “hey no problem, you can go past as soon as you solve my riddle”. Then proceeds to lay out some complicated sounding but generally easily solved with reason sorta riddle (the most famous being two sisters, one gave birth to the other, who later gave birth to the first, who are they…. answer being moon and sun duh!) In young adult fantasy, the riddle is almost always solved.. in ancient greek legends… not so much. And in the case of an incorrect answer… well you get to be a sphinx snack!

For those who never read the above, here’s your bulleted descriptors:

  • Sphinx have a human head, sometimes male sometimes female, sometimes something in between and generally with the addition of some sort of headdress and occasionally breasts on the females
  • Possesses the muscular body of a lion, occasionally with a snake headed tail
  • Has the wings of an eagle just in case you can run faster than a lion
  • Enjoys riddles, wordplay and human flesh
    •

      Judgement Is Complete

      The Winning Sphinx Entry

      So long story short…

I hung with a whole bunch of the original beast drawing crew saturday night… the plan was for us to come to a consensus on sphinxes… as for most plans that involve hours of booze consumption… sometimes original plans get sidetracked and it becomes a helluva lot easier to just give the win to the new guy! And even though I’m pretty sure that’s a belly button and not a cloaca… just making me imagine it was a cloaca is good enough for me!

Disagree if you must but know that judgement is law and to the winner a shirt will go…. And even though the contest is done we’ll always welcome new Sphinxe drawings for the archives! So draw on and remember, 25 beasts drawn earns you a shirt!

Yesss! Laffy Taffy humor has seriously replaced like 3/4s of the jokes I used to store in my limited headspace so I love this (they are also fans of booberry pancakes)… the tiny kite in the background made me lol, in my opinion, a beast can never have too many buds and… is that Bill Clinton?

Gah! Well that’s freaking adorable! While the lil down dog, I wanna play, kitty stretch is amazing… I’m voting the super excited snake tail is my favorite part! That’s also a pretty amazing rump!

Man I’m just inching closer and closer to being the guy who draws sexy furries… that aside, I figure “What ya need Hun?” would very rarely actually get a “right” answer… also note I’m claiming jean short points.

Couple things, first, those toes are amazing, second, I’m pretty sure that human head used to be attached to a guy that used to skate at my house in the 80s, third I appreciate that, pretty obviously, every part of this thing parties… and finally is that a freaking cloaca? cause if so, bonus points!

well I made the mistake of imagining what something with such a giant heavy swollen head would look like flying with its butt centered wings and dammit I cant stop giggling… all jackknifed and too heavy to fly… anyways… for such a sullen looking face I gotta say, there’s some spring in that stomping prance!

Some people will see this as a tragic hero fighting to triumph over some fabled supernatural force. But what I see is an adorably giant, winged, green, cat person trying desperately not to get stabbed in the crotch! …And all the while, I’m gently reminded of asparagus!

Oh I’ve most def had enough cats in my life to recognize “about to yack a furball” posture! Pretty good way to start a riddle if you think about it… puke something up and then just say “Guess what this was?” You should get a freaking foreshortening badge for that crown btw!

Ah yes! The old “Sphinx-ter” play! I’m going to argue that in a world where I debate the virtues of hastily created mythical beast drawings on a near daily basis… That sphinx’s question is totally valid! Plus his plaid makes me smile!

My heart will always side with the quick ones! I mean this could be so many things! My favorite being what looks to be a Harpy having just been launched from a circus cannon! And for those who doubt me, tell me those ferocious slashing lines don’t make you feel the potential energy of a full on Sphinx assault! Dare ya.

I gotta say for having an ewok face and wookie hair this thing has some freaking terrifying claws! And is he wearing football eye black? I know egypt is sunny… and if your main task is to just hang out looking into the distance… i suppose that makes some sense.

Yes! Nothing like a a ferocious cobra tail to toughen up what is obviously a baby – puppy hybrid from space! And those perfectly pointed feets are pretty freaking great too!
