The Vegetable Lamb

Medieval Asia’s Wooliest Fruit!

As far as I know this one’s our first all vegetable beast! The Vegetable Lamb of Tartary is an old medieval legend of a plant in central Asia that grew a sheep as it’s fruit. The Sheep was attached to the plant via an umbilical cord and grazed on all the surrounding vegetation until there was no food left within reach at which point the plant and the attached lamb would both wither and die. Once dead, the lamb could be consumed, as he was made of flesh, blood and bones like any other lamb, well except that it’s blood was sweet like honey.

Now those of you mystery solvers might just say to yourself, “hey self, this would be a decent way for a strange culture to explain cotton” at which point I’ll ask you to stop thinking so much and take into account how much potential for goodness this one has.

Man that umbilical cord looks tight! Great torque on that tree and you gotta imagine, the way bodies work, that’s probably a reasonably sensitive tether. Great feeling of determination and frustration all at once, and bonus points for this one still having snow on the ground.

Judge’s Commentary

This one made me laugh, and I don’t know why! I like the ram’s seeming power over the tree, and his apparent disinterest in the vegetation around him. Also the whole umbilical cord situation looks very uncomfortable. Submitted by Nikki

So in one of those coincidences of life, my wife had just shown me the tree that looks like a woman dancing pic like 15 minutes ago… so this reminds me of that, but that aside this is some amazing texturing, you can really feel the lambiness. And great black eyes!

Judge’s Commentary

This guy just looks so sweet. Nice integration of sheep and tree, nice squat position, and nice tail. Nice all around.

Hey you can’t trick me that’s an adorable fuzzy sheepdog wearing fake rams horns! Beyond the cool ass trippy maze lines my favorite part is the eyes on the one bottom left who obviously just ate a patch of Ayahuasca!

Judge’s Commentary

What sold me on this is the dead one. Great folded in limbs, like a dead multi-legged bug, the kind we get in my home, nasty bugs.

Right on a vineyard of hanging sheep! Talk about a wonder of the world! gotta wonder how messy that place gets if they ever ripen to the point of falling off though. I’ve waded through rotten pumpkins I can only imagine flesh and bone makes it worse!

Gotta wonder how many beasts evolution has taken before anyone gets a chance to peek ’em, the aquatic vegetable lamb of South America for example… never really had much of a chance.

You know I’m not sure I’ve seen a face this contented on a beast ever, If I couldnt see the surrounding terrain I’d be absolutely confident that he had just pooped!

Pretty sure this is our first beast done with pastelles and the white on the colored paper is remarkably poppy and clean and you have to love that he’s made from such a quickly renewable resource.

Man I’ll always be a sucker fro green and purple! Such a vibrant plant full of such a festive array of characters and props! I’m calling the “L” necklace kinda genius and i like that they seem to grow just what the need to survive on their own lil plot!

So this one came with the note “my first abstract!” which a little bit has me wondering which is top and which is bottom, so I went the natural flow of a lupine! My favorite part is that all the eyes look at another eye, cause obviously Veggie Lambs communicate telepathically!

My Veg Beast says I’m hungry for blood, but I’ll settle for a vegetarian diet. If you want it to, this one’s got a great creepy to it, from the subtle tint of murder in the eyes to the seemingly sewn on old woman arms, I kinda love it that way… Of course I think you could also read this as adorably nibbling.

Such language! Though i gotta admit this one’s got a watery gaze and puppy lipped quiver that almost takes it to sad clown town and the oak leaf ear is a very nice touch!

You know there’s a pretty good play of adorable innocence and biting humor in this one… perhaps a good lesson about being wary of your resources, or a warning about doing stuff with your own supply… and all while feeling almost sunday school.

Ok so here’s the question, grown-up or two year old? I know the answer, do you? My favorite parts are the cactus lamb with weens for feet and the invitation shaped envelope that welcomes us to the adventure… does anyone else see the word “F*ck” ending with a knife, there across the middle?

Yes! that’s another pince nez on the proud papa’s snout! Interesting in that this is a much calmer energy then I’m used to from this artist, breathe deep and grow you little adorable body snatcher seed pods full of delicious veggie mutton… And that palm or whatever it is reminds me of one of those signs where far too many streets meet at once!

Oooh so dark and thorny! Though potentially dead, I gotta say that lamb looks pretty contented given it’s surroundings and what with the wavy hill lines I imagine that the ground it’s laying on is especially soft and mossy! That or I’m entirely missing the point and this is a message sent to wake up the sheeple to free them from their binds!

You know I have no idea why I thought this one would be tough to do from a “Seanist” perspective, it seems to flow oh so naturally from the characteristic shifty eyes right into the trademarked unbalanced ears. His lil pig nose, the way his lil legs stretch to meet a ground that they’ll never touch and that frown are making me especially happy this week.

The Vegetable Lamb Entry # 16

The Vegetable Lamb Entry # 16

Good solid veg and flesh role reversal in this one! His lil feet look just like they are wearing tiny rain boots and you know with his corny adornments this guy just frigging hates squirrels… does the size of his corn plumage make a difference when attracting a suitably vegged mate?

The Vegetable Lamb Entry # 18

The Vegetable Lamb Entry # 18

Hahaha, it’s like a lil lamb flag! So i can’t get past the fact that all I see is a very frustrated Winnie the Pooh dressed in his best lamb, like there’s probably a mighty pot of lamb huny just out of frame, but given his current predicament, he’ll never taste it’s goodness… ooooh humbug…

Wow, so these are reminding me more and more of those maps in the beginning of a fantasy novel, that show all the lands that will be covered in the text… I sorta can’t wait for the chapter on “Rump Tower” and you know there will be some Cloud City like betrayal in the Fumes! What ever you do, don’t let that floating teeth bit drag you in, cause if you let it, there is an escher-esque play with space and shading that hurts my brain

So cute! though I’m pretty sure this one could also work for the famed Vegtopus, known to dine exclusively on shitzhu shaped, adorable and tiny legged lambs! Always a fan of the long vine, single leaf motiff and damn good fluff on this one!

The Vegetable Lamb Entry # 21

The Vegetable Lamb Entry # 21

I’m torn by seeing this as one whole composition or more one of those collagey nature poster showing the various stages of foliage… though not sure it matters when the little fuzzballs on the vine are that cute!

Interesting, this totally grim grins me… like the pile of rotten lambs and the blood red tongue soooo not even close to reaching its goal, is so dark… it probably shouldn’t make me laugh… but it did! Nicely played!
