While Almost Everything is Deadly in Australia, Their Vampires Just Make You Wet With Saliva and A lil Shorter!
Sometimes the description in one of my books is too perfect to muddy up with my tangent laden, gen X cynicism. So we’re presenting this one in it’s pure form. All credit due to Brenda Rosen and her “Mythical Creatures Bible”
The Vampire of Indeginous Australian culture is the Yara-ma-yha-who, a little red man just over three feet (1 meter) tall with a large head and gaping mouth. The Yara-ma-yha-who lives at the top of fig trees, holding on with fingers and toes that resemble the suckers of an octopus.
When an unsuspecting person takes shelter under an inhabited tree, the Yara-ma-yha-who jumps down and sucks the person’s blood with its hands and feet, leaving the person weak and helpless but rarely causing death. Later the creature comes back and swallows the victim whole. After a nap it regurgitates the meal. The consumed person is still alive… though a little shorter than before, after they have been eaten!
